Dealing with Expectations: Family

Reuniting with family and friends can cause great joy and excitement. But when the thrill of the reunion passes, reality begins to set in.

The international student has changed during the time away an
d adjusting back to life within the family can prove difficult. Perspectives on life and work (worldview) might have significantly altered due to the overseas experience. Families back at home may have unrealistically high and very specific expectations about the student’s future. The family’s definition of “success” might differ greatly from that of the returning student who may have developed new ideas and dreams while living abroad. Dealing with these kinds of differences while maintaining and honoring those relationships can present a major challenge.
